Baking Soda and Vinegar Get Rid of Cat Smells
Cat owners have an abundance of cleaning products to choose from and for fear of anyone making the dreaded sniffing sounds, scrunching up their face and asking, “What’s that smell?” For a cat owner, there is nothing more embarrassing than the smell of cat urine lingering in their home.Luckily there are many solutions to getting rid of “that smell.” Many pet stain removers are available for purchase at pet stores, grocery stores, and even hardware stores, but nothing beats what Mother Nature has given us with products found right in our kitchen pantry.
There are two natural cleaners that are highly powerful: baking soda and white distilled vinegar. Both of these ingredients are cheap and readily available. Baking soda can be purchased at $2 for a four-pound box. White distilled vinegar can be purchased for as low as $2/gallon.
To clean the cat litter box, empty it out when most of the litter has been used. Scrape anything remaining on the bottom of the pan with the scooper used to sift out waste. Make a solution with half vinegar and half water. Let it sit in the box for about 20 minutes then rinse it thoroughly. Fill it with litter as you normally do and add a layer of baking soda.
Make the same solution in a spray bottle and use it to clean the floor. If your carpets need cleaning or help with controlling odor, sprinkle baking soda on the carpet and let it sit all night. The next day vacuums it up and then use the vinegar solution. You can use the same basic solution as stated above in a spray bottle, but it is recommended you add a few drops of dish soap. Afterward, use a clean wet towel to soak up the solution. If you have a large area to clean, you may use this formula in a carpet shampooer. Using a carpet shampooer will make it easier to soak up the solution but this is not necessary if you have a small area to clean.

The smell of vinegar can be strong for some people, but there is no need to worry. The smell disappears when it dries but if it is too bothersome you can add lemon juice to the solution to help kill the smell. Using baking soda and vinegar are cheap, easy ways to clean your house and get rid of that dreaded pet odor. Happy cleaning!
